Chemo Rash Treatment & EGFR Rash Treatment

What is EGFR Rash?

Chemo Rash, also known as EGFR Rash is a common skin-related side effect that comes as a result of using certain chemotherapy medications.

This dry skin rash is normally characterized by;

  • Roughness,
  • Mild scaling,
  • Pimples,
  • The feeling of tightness and
  • Perhaps itching and burning on the skin of the face.

It might also be known as a maculopapular rash which is made of flat and raised skin lesions. The word “maculopapular” is a combination of the word, macule – which means flat discolored skin lesions, and papule – which are small raised bumps.

The rash may range in color, from light pink to bright red. The rash is sometimes itchy and hot.

Chemo rash is typically preceded by redness of the skin or a warm sensation on the face that may feel like a sunburn. The rash may lead to peeling or lesions. You will also notice acne-like red bumps, which often form in clusters appearing on the face, chest, neck, back, and scalp.

A good number of chemotherapy medications normally cause EGFR Rash, these include Tarceva, Iressa. Erbitux, Caprelsa, Vectibix, Tykerb, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

EGFR Rash Skin Care and Management

To manage EGFR Rash there are a number of things you need to do, First, follow your doctor’s instructions. Take your medication at the right time of day and the right dosage as prescribed by the doctor.

If the skin rash persists your doctor may temporarily stop treatment to monitor it.

EGFR rash always seems to feel better with intense hydration. It helps relieve the redness, irritation, and dryness which is affecting the skin. Never treat the affected area with drying agents designed to fight acne. Getting a hydrating moisturizer or lightweight serum is best for maintaining the skin.

Recommendations for effective Chemo Rash treatment:

  • Avoid hot baths, instead, take a quick warm shower.
  • Use only mild and hypoallergenic soap. Try to avoid antibacterial soaps as they are more drying.
  • Use a quality thick moisturizer; try to avoid alcohol, fragrances, and dyes.
  • Pat yourself dry with a towel; do not rub your skin.
  • Remove all makeup with gentle cleansers.
  • Use sunscreen and avoid exposure to the sun. Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. If need be select a product for sensitive skin. Reapply sunscreen after two hours of continuous exposure.
  • Avoid wearing clothes that will make your skin feel itchy.
  • Stay away from perfume, cologne, or aftershave that contains alcohol.
